A BERLIN GOLD-GROUND DATED ROYAL PORTRAIT CUP AND SAUCER 1819, BLUE SCEPTRE MARKS, GILDER'S AND PAINTER'S MARKS, THE CUP WITH PRESSNUMMER 10 AND I, THE SAUCER WITH PRESSNUMMER 9 Of large size, the cup with a loop handle, the front with an oval portrait medallion of the infant Prince George, later George V King of Hanover, within a square gilt panel with burnished palmettes against a broad band of flowers between gilt cisel? bands with arches enclosing foliage, the interior richly gilt, the saucer with a central gilt medallion inscribed George born 27 May 1819 against a ground of spiralling lily-of-the-valley, within a similar gilt border, the underside with a gilt band The saucer 6 11/16 in. (17 cm.) diam. Lot Notes George V (1819-1878) was born in Berlin and was the last King of the House of Hanover. He was first cousin to Queen Victoria of Britain, and also became the Duke of Cumberland. A similar cup and saucer was sold in Session 10 of Sotheby's sale of Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover, Schloss Marienburg, on 9th October 2005, lot 2359.
