TWO SEVRES BLEU CELESTE-GROUND PLATES FROM THE SERVICE GIVEN BY LOUIS XVI TO ARCHDUKE FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA (ASSIETTES 'UNIE') 1785, BLUE INTERLACED LS ENCLOSING DATE LETTERS hh, PAINTER'S MARKS FOR TANDART AND MME TAILLANDIER, GILDER'S MARKS FOR CHAUVAUX AND LA FRANCE Each painted with pink roses and buds on a puce ground reserved within a gilt band, with a further concentric band of pearl ornament on a puce band radiating gilt dot and interlaced scrolls, the border with three panels of roses, cornflowers and marguerites reserved within a cartouche of tooled gilt grasses, alternating with entwined looped beads suspending flowersprays, within shaped gilt line rim (one with a large restored rim chip and repainting and retouching to the gilding, the second with a small rim chip with traces of retouching to the gilding, small footrim chips, some surface scratching to each) 9? in. (23.5 cm.) wide (2) The present plates are from a service presented by Louis XVI to Karl Anton Joseph Johann Stanislaus, Archduke of Austria and Viceroy of Lombardy, older brother of Marie-Antoinette. He visited Paris between May and August, 1786 with his consort Maria Beatrice, Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara, they travelled under the assumed names of comte and comtesse de Nellembourg. Jean-Baptiste Tandart l'an? was a flower painter at S?vres 1754-1800. Mme. Genevi?ve Taillandier (n?e Le Roy) was a painter of flowers, ground patterns and patterns, 1774-98. Andr?-Joseph La France was a gilder and flower painter, 1776-1803 and 1813-28. Michel-Barnab? Chauvaux, l'an? or p?re was a gilder, 1752-88.
