PAIR OF DOCCIA PLATES CIRCA 1745-50 Each painted in underglaze-blue with a rose on a thorny stem, within double borders of diaper panels alternating with flowers and scrolls (small patches of wear and scratches to well) 8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm.) diam. (2) Lot Notes While the floral and geometric borders have origins in Oriental prototypes, the naturalistic rose in the centre of these plates can be traced back to European botanical engravings that were circulating in the early part of the 18th century. A plate of the same pattern is illustrated by Johann Kr?ftner (ed.), Baroque Luxury Porcelain, Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna, Exhibition Catalogue (Munich, 2005), p. 250, no. 64, where reference is made to the 'Inventory of Porcelain and Majolica, written on 11 July 1757 for the 30 April 1757' (Archivio Ginori Lisci, Florence, Fabbrica delle Porcellane di Doccia, Scritture e Documenti, file no. 37, no. 6, p. 16) where there are listed '345 small round plates with a blue rose' as well as '14 medium-sized and large fruit bowls with a dog rose'.
